The Spreewald, just downstream from Wolziger See, is a UNESCO biosphere reserve where the waterways are still the roads — over 200 kilometres of them. You do not drive to the shops there, you paddle. Your houseboat is the only vehicle you need.

Bad Saarow, just a short cruise away, has been a spa town since the 19th century — Berliners came here by train to breathe the air and float on the lake. A century later, you arrive by houseboat and do exactly the same thing, only slower.

Houseboats on this lake do not rush, and neither should you. The trick the locals know: moor up early, swim before breakfast, and save the cruising for the soft afternoon light. By evening the lake belongs to whoever was smart enough to stay put.
